EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS VOICES

One of this year’s themes was Jordan’s Principle — a child-first commitment to ensure First Nations children receive the services they need, when they need them. Named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, it ensures that jurisdictional disputes never delay access to essential supports. Legally binding and upheld by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, Jordan’s Principle helps First Nations children access health, education, and social services fairly and without discrimination.

Another one of this year's themes was Band Designates of Alberta — community-appointed representatives who play a key role in supporting First Nations children and families. Band Designates help ensure culturally appropriate services are provided, acting as a bridge between families, Nations, and provincial systems. Rooted in community authority and traditional values, they advocate for the best interests of children, helping to keep them connected to their culture, language, and identity. Their work is vital in ensuring First Nations children are supported with respect, dignity, and care.

Among the themes explored this year was Coordination Agreements — collaborative arrangements designed to streamline the delivery of services for First Nations children and families. These agreements help different governments and organizations work together efficiently, ensuring timely access to health, education, and social supports. By clarifying roles and responsibilities, Coordination Agreements reduce delays and improve communication, making sure that children receive the care they need without unnecessary barriers or confusion.

Included in this year’s themes was Bill C-92 — landmark legislation that affirms the jurisdiction of Indigenous peoples over child and family services. Bill C-92 empowers First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities to design and deliver culturally appropriate supports that reflect their values and traditions. By recognizing Indigenous laws and customs, this bill promotes the well-being and safety of children while respecting their identity and heritage.
